Dialogue Forum

MUM has a long reputation for hosting Dialogue Forums.  These forums are safe places for people of varying views to tell their stories and listen to one another.  After short presentations from persons with varying views, individuals are able to dialogue around tables with the assistance of a facilitator.  Finally, views are shared in a large group setting.

The purpose of these forums is to truly communicate beyond the usual “sound bytes,” not to persuade others to one’s own view.

Past Dialogue Forum:“Gay Marriage: Communicating Beyond Sound Bytes.”  Each of five clergy presenters had different views on gay marriage.  They were asked to respond to the following question: “A person who attends your congregation has come to your office.  She tells you that she is in a committed relationship with a woman who also helps her raise her child.  She asks you to bless their union in some king of way.  She also expresses her grief at not being able to be married in the eyes of the state.  What do you say and how do you provide pastoral care to her?”  Then participants shared their stories and views with each other around the tables.

MUM's recent Dialogue Series: "Race, Theology and Politics." Rev. Wanda Washington opened MUM's dialogue on Race, Theology, and Politics at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Rev. Washington is the pastor of Grace United Church of Christ. Rev. Wanda J. Washington served as Associate Pastor and Director of Pastoral Services at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. The Dialogue series examines the media's use of race, theology and politics in the current political presidential elections. The Dialogue, however, also examines communal perceptions regarding race, theology and politics. On going sessions will continue to engage the Madison community for solutions and further action.
