What We Do at MUM
MUM seeks for social justice in regards to poverty and racism in Dane County. MUM works on several issues such as housing for all, re-entry of formerly incarcerated people, healthy neighborhoods, and mentoring children who have a parent that is incarcerated. MUM identifies, studies, urges action, and works together for social justice in the broader community.
Over the 30 years people have come to count on us when they need to
- Convene and Link people of faith communities to engage in social action
- Help the greater Madison community frame issues with compassion, mercy, and justice
- Promote interfaith cooperation and collaboration
- Ask the questions, “Are all people’s voices being heard?”
- Engage youth on issues of concern
- Promote respectful and thoughtful dialogue
- Advocate with low-income people
- Emphasize change in unjust systems
There are many ways for you to work for justice and healing in our communities. 1) Participate in a Returning Prisoner Simulation; 2) Join a Circle of Support for a formerly incarcerated person; 3) Arrange for your congregation or group to see a film about prisoner re-entry and hear the stories of Voices Beyond Bars members; 4) Sign up to become a Mentor to a child who has a parent(s) who is incarcerated; and 4) Volunteer at special events or provide ongoing office assistance.
